June must decide where her loyalty lies and if she really has turned her back on the Republic once and for all. June’s role requires her to convince the Elector to trust her, and learning what kind of person he is (or, at least, appears to be) gives her second thoughts about the plan. After all the Republic has done to them, this seems like an easy decision for Day and June to make. All the Patriots ask in return is for the pair’s help in the rebels’ plan to assassinate the new Elector Primo of the Republic. The Patriots are not only willing to give Day medical attention, but they also offer to assist with finding Day’s younger brother, Eden, who’s being held by the Republic, plus secure Day and June’s escape to the Colonies. To Sum It Up: Day and June are on the run from the Republic, and with Day seriously injured, June seeks out the only source she thinks might aid them: the rebel group, the Patriots.

Spacek reads with a slight Southern lilt and quiet authority. Competing with Stanley's memory, Spacek forges her own path to a victorious reading. Many viewers of the 1962 movie adaptation believe that Lee was the film's narrator, but it was actually an unbilled Kim Stanley who read a mere six passages and left an indelible impression. Similarly, Gabriel’s relatives are two-dimensional, with one being a virtuous disabled person mainly meant to show Gabriel in a positive light. It’s an anomaly in Balogh’s usually deft unpacking of human weakness and worth, better displayed in Someone To Remember (2019). His past suffering and Jessica’s desire for him serve to justify her falling in love, but despite some tender moments, the relationship feels contrived. Even when his motivation for staying mum about his true identity is revealed, one struggles to feel sympathetic since he seems to prioritize his own griefs over the wrongs done to a woman. Gabriel is a hard character to like, however, because of his deception about who he is, his odd choice to remain in London despite the need to rescue a needy family member in the country-and the troubling implications of the fact that he has made money in shipping in pre–Civil War America. Yet she is unenthusiastic about her choices until two men, including Gabriel, show an interest. At 25, Jessica is finally ready to marry. But Gabriel has a secret about his identity, and he believes its eventual revelation requires that he have an aristocratic wife at his side-one he decides will be the patrician Jessica.
